Heart-Mind Retreat 2016

See the Present, Resolve the Past,
Set a Direction for your Future

Are you ready to get to the
Heart of the Matter?

AVI is pleased to announce dates for the 2016 Heart-Mind retreat. It is Gary’s intent that, in time, as a critical mass of Viniyoga students who have done their own inner practice for some years develops, that AVI will offer its first Heart-Mind mentorship training program.

The Ancients called the network of tensions that are at the root of our personality the Hṛdaya-Granti. These tensions, or knots, are divided into the bondage of ignorance, desire, and action. These knots influence our thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Much of our activity – whether at the level of body, speech, or mind – is oriented towards the release of these tensions and the fulfillment of our desires. Our deepest impulses are to perpetuate our self-existence, to achieve knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, and to experience delight, satisfaction, and joy. These impulses influence and shape our thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

If we reflect honestly on our experience, we can see that our efforts are not always successful! In fact most of us experience a mixture of successes and failures; our lives are punctuated with periods of “incessant activity and constant frustration”, and we encounter obstacles to the progress we had hoped for.
In this retreat we will explore the causal inter-relationship between behavior, feeling, thought, desire, and impulse. Then, using the Cakra model, we will examine how this causal chain has conditioned our past and shaped our present. With that as a foundation, we will use the lens of the Hṛdaya-Granti to resolve the past, understand the present, and set a direction for the future.

Learn to apply these ancient tools and move toward your highest potential. Practices will include āsana, prāṇāyāma, chanting, mantra, meditation, and journaling.

November 30 - December 4, 2016
Austin, Texas

Whether you are just taking your first steps on the Yoga path or are an experienced Yoga teacher, please join us for a special time of personal integration and transformation using the inner practices of yoga.

Gary Kraftsow, M.A., E-RYT 500, has been a pioneer in the transmission of yoga for health, healing and personal transformation in the U.S. for more than 30 years. He is the founder of the American Viniyoga Institute and author of Yoga for Wellness and Yoga for Transformation.

Gary's journey began over 40 years ago at Colgate University where he majored in religious studies. He traveled to Madras at 19 where he studied the mystical teaching and practices of Saiva Siddhanta privately with a well-known mystic and scholar of south India, V.A Devasenapathi. During this same time, he studied the very practical science of yoga as taught with T.K.V. Desikachar, son of T Krishnamacharya.

Back in the United States, Gary studied with respected scholars, including Kenneth Morgan, a leading authority on the study of world religions, M. Holmes Hartshorne, one of the foremost scholars on Soren Kierkegaard, often described as the "Father of Christian Existentialism", Dr. Raimundo Panikkar, a scholar of world religions and a world leader in interfaith dialogue and the great Tibetan Buddhist master, Kalu Rinpoche.

Nancy Chapdelaine, ME, RYT 500, is an AVI senior faculty member.  She has a strong interest in helping others to learn how to use Viniyoga™ to support their lives –  both personally and professionally. Nancy lives in the western suburbs of Chicago where she is employed by a global telecommunications company and teaches Viniyoga classes and workshops.

This was an opportunity to refocus attention on our own self-discovery, relationship to our practice and our goals. It was a great experience that I'd like to repeat.
