Managing Chronic Pain: A Viniyoga Approach

Thursday, October 1 — 9:00am - 4:30pm
Thursday Full-Day Workshops
Therapeutic / Mixed Levels

There are many types and causes of chronic pain, and the principles and practices used to help individuals manage their conditions vary according to these differences. In addition to the objective pain symptoms, there are different ways that individuals cope with pain: cognitively and emotionally. In Viniyoga therapy, multiple strategies are integrated to help the whole person manage his or her condition, including breath centric asana, pranayama, mantra, and meditation to help individuals manage their conditions. We'll look at two categories of chronic pain--headaches and fibromyalgia—to explore the benefits of yoga therapy.

Designed for individuals suffering from chronic pain, as well as health professionals, yoga teachers, & others who would like to understand & apply Viniyoga therapeutic interventions to manage these conditions. Lecture, discussion, & therapeutic practice.

Friday, October 2 — 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Weekend Classes
Therapeutic / Mixed Levels

We all have experienced occasional sleepless nights. For many, however, sleeplessness is the norm rather than the exception. Chronic sleeplessness has significant impact on our personal, social, and work lives including lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and loss of productivity. Causes of sleeplessness can range from the normal stress of daily life, various emotional states, certain physiological conditions, types of medical treatments, structural pain, particular environmental stressors, and specific dietary choices. In addition, as we age, the length and quality of our sleep can be significantly affected. Explore the theory, principles, and practices of yoga therapy for addressing this widespread and troubling condition.

Lecture, discussion, and an integrated practice of asana, pranayama, mantra, and meditation.

The Yoga Continuum: Facing Challenges with Courage and Compassion
Gary Kraftsow & Judy Lief & Aadil Palkhivala & Linda Sparrowe

Saturday, October 3 — 1:45pm - 3:15pm
Special Events

Yoga and mindfulness can prepare us to face challenges as we age, move through illness, and reach our final journey. Join Yoga Journal in this continuation of Naropa University's Radical Compassion Symposium, as we delve into how yoga’s teachings and tools are a source of healing, understanding, coping, and acceptance for those experiencing health challenges, as well as for those in our support network. We’ll also illuminate how both western and eastern medical and wellness communities are adopting preventive, therapeutic and palliative care and incorporating yoga and Eastern wisdom practices in treatments for cancer, age-related diseases, and illness. In this powerful exploration, we’ll gain invaluable perspective, compassion, and understanding about the challenges to our overall health and well-being that we, and those we love, will inevitably face — and discover how yoga can be a source of strength and steadiness throughout.

Open to all.

Yoga, Chakras, and Fulfillment: Mantra, Meditation, and Visualization

Saturday, October 3 — 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Weekend Classes
Contemplative / Mixed Levels

Meditation begins as we master the fluctuation of attention and direct our minds rather than being pulled along. Once we gain this control, we can set a new direction for our lives. We'll take an in-depth look at the chakra model of the human system, learn more about the structure of this model, and experience how asana, pranayama, mantra, and meditation can be used together to create deep and lasting personal transformation.

Discussion with asana, pranayama, mantra, and meditation.
