Common Aches and Pains: The Upper Back, Neck, and Shoulders

Many people come to yoga looking for relief from common aches and pains. We'll explore the biomechanics of the upper back, neck, and shoulders, and the types of problems that can affect these areas. Then we'll develop and practice a sequence of adapted asanas designed to relieve stress as well as strengthen weaker areas. Lecture, discussion and asana practice.

Yoga has tremendous potential for assisting the general population with reducing stress and the effects of stress-related diseases. This lecture and practice includes methods to relieve musculoskeletal tension, alleviate headaches, improve sleep, and develop coping strategies for dealing with stressful events and the negative symptoms of stress. Integrated practice of asana, pranayama, mantra, and meditation.

The majority of these dedicated yogis, however, have been focused on the outer practice of yoga, the development or rebalancing of our physical bodies. In this class, we'll explore the inner practices of yoga, focusing on the transformation of our minds. Emotional Balance: Working with Anxiety and Depression

Explore the yoga-therapy perspective and methods for working with anxiety and depression. We'll focus on psychological aspects of the human system, explore models of the integrated personality that emerge from Vedic teachings, and discover the science of meditation that the ancients developed for reducing suffering and cultivating our higher human potential. Recognizing that positive states have a deeply restorative impact on the entire system, we are able to develop certain practices to transform negative qualities of mind, promote general well-being, and manage the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Lecture, discussion and asana practice.
