Program Overview
Yoga Therapy is an approach to health and healing that is derived from the Yoga tradition of Patanjali and the Ayurvedic system of health. The goal of Viniyoga™ Therapy is to empower individuals facing health conditions (at any level) to use the tools of Yoga to improve health and well being. Viniyoga™ Therapy is a complementary or alternative treatment modality. The settings of practice for Viniyoga™ Therapists include private practice, Yoga schools, community settings and the Western healthcare system settings.

The AVI Viniyoga™ Therapist Training Program is a clinical training program that educates experienced yoga teachers about the application of the theory, frameworks and tools of yoga to individuals and groups of people with health conditions. The content of the program builds on the theory and methods included in the AVI Viniyoga™ Teacher Training Program and the AVI Foundation for Yoga Therapy Program. In addition to clinical skills, the AVI Viniyoga™ Therapist Training Program emphasizes the continuing personal development of the Viniyoga™ Therapist in the area of personal practice.

Program Faculty
Gary Kraftsow is the primary teacher in the AVI Viniyoga™ Therapist Training Program. He is assisted by a team of Viniyoga™ Therapists trained by the American Viniyoga™ Institute. With the help of Clare Collins RN, PhD, ERYT (500) and Mary Hallway, OTR/L, CYT, the training has evolved to a new level. Our materials and presentation balance didactics with practical experience and includes options for group and individual mentoring. The assistant team presents some program content, facilitates small group processes and provides mentoring to students enrolled in the program.

Program Content
Over three two-week training sessions, the following content areas will be emphasized:
1. Yoga philosophy and theory
2. Models of health and human development
3. The therapeutic relationship
4. Communication skills
5. Clinical decision-making skills: interviewing, observation/assessment, treatment planning, and Intervention
6. Application of Yoga methods (asana, pranayama, meditation, chanting and personal ritual) to commonly occurring structural, physiological and emotional conditions
7. Design of practices for groups of students with a similar condition
8. Strategies for Working in the Healthcare System
9. Professional Issues: ethics, business practices, legal aspects of practice

Program Format
The AVI Viniyoga™ Therapist Training Program includes three two-week sessions where you are able to immerse yourself in the learning experience in a supportive yoga community of fellow students, teachers, and mentors. Each session includes lectures, yoga practices which are focused on clinical application, case demonstrations, small group work, and guided independent study. Between program sessions, students are given home study assignments and work with Yoga therapy clients.

The first session focuses on commonly-occurring structural issues. The second session focuses on physiological health issues and adaptation to chronic illness. The third session focuses on emotional health concerns.

Mentoring
Mentoring and consultation is an important part of improving confidence and skills as a Viniyoga™ therapist. The tuition covers mentoring with faculty as follows: review of written case studies and consultation at each session, a half-hour telephone meeting in between sessions and 1 - 2 case study teleconferences with Gary Kraftsow and faculty in between sessions. More extensive individual mentoring is available between sessions and on an ongoing basis after certification for a fee.

Completion of the following is required for AVI Therapist Certification:
1. 50 hours of anatomy study prior to entry into the program.
2. Full attendance at the three training sessions.
